The sea-facing terrace, spacious rooms, and comfortable beds made this a lovely place to stay. Stopover Shela is practical and beautiful, in a beautiful setting by the water. Hamid, the owner, was friendly and attentive. They serve one of the best breakfasts in Kenya, with natural smoothies and lots to choose from. Thanks so much, Hamid. I hope we meet again!

We had wonderful personal service, and the food was very good. We preferred room service and were always given far more than one person could eat. There’s no alcohol at this Muslim hotel, so we walked to a local hotel run by the British when we wanted some. The owner arranged a local guide to take us by boat across the bay to historic Swahili ruins, a short ride away. I spent a week here back in 2003. The suite was beautiful and clean. Some mornings you’d wake to the famous "cats of Lamu" meowing from boats they’d climbed into at low tide. And you get up early because the beautiful days start at 5:00 a.m., with the mosque directly behind the hotel calling people to prayer. This was two years after 911, and we had some reservations about traveling as Americans, but the people were absolutely wonderful and did everything to make us feel welcome. It was an unforgettable experience, the kind of once-in-a-lifetime trip I’d recommend.

Traditional Swahili design, right on the beach, and very clean.
