The place itself is lovely, with trees and rabbits around. But watch out if you get blood on anything. I’d read reviews saying sheets cost $20, and I ended up paying $15 for a towel. I asked to take the bloody towel with me, but they’d already washed it and handed it back soaking wet. Next time, I joked, I’ll get blood on the villa floor and collect the whole villa. It’s bloody expensive there. Breakfast was limited, just instant coffee, and the coffee machine wasn’t working. The Wi-Fi was down too.

The quiet, dark night on the balcony was beautiful, and the surroundings, cabin, and huge pool made a great first impression. Still, the stay had some real frustrations. We were the only guests, and after dinner there was no real bar service. Since shops are far away, bring your own supplies and alcohol if you drink. Staff were young and tried hard, but seemed inexperienced. They came to our cabin around 3 pm to ask what we wanted for dinner, and we got no information about what to do in Kulen national park. I guess we could have searched online. My partner has psoriasis and scratched himself in his sleep, leaving a small blood mark on the sheet. At checkout they showed us a photo of it and charged an extra US$25 for cleaning. Such a shame, because this place could be the jewel in the crown.

Bong Thom Forest Lodge is tucked into the countryside at San Day Village in Banteay Srey District, close to Banteay Srei and the Butterfly Centre. Getting there from central Siem Reap takes about 35 minutes by tuk-tuk. It felt like a peaceful Khmer retreat away from the city, while still being comfortable and connected.

We’ve visited Bong Thom Forest around six times over the past three months, staying overnight, coming for weekends, and making day trips. The food is decent, though not amazing, and lately they’ve often been out of basics like potatoes or French fries. On yesterday’s visit we spent $30 on lunch and the afternoon at the pool. In the past, we weren’t charged for pool use when spending money there, which is how most resorts in SR handle it. But with the old manager gone, they added a $7.50 pool fee on top of our food. We were often the only guests, so it felt like a poor way to treat returning visitors. I asked to have the charge removed, and the owners replied, “not approved.” I’ve often promoted this beautiful resort on my blogs, and they even offer a 10% discount for that. I disagree with the decision and doubt we’ll return. It’s a shame. Management needs to get things together before pushing loyal guests away.

The staff arranged some really interesting day trips to the temples and nearby mountains, and Nureak Yim at reception looked after us especially well. We spent three nights in a private bungalow among the trees. The wooden walkways, decorations, and facilities all felt carefully put together. We loved the pool on its raised platform at sunset, especially with a drink. Ask for the cocktails. It was good value, and we can’t imagine choosing another place. I’d recommend it to anyone after a quiet base that’s handy for Angkor temples and other sights. It may work well for families with kids too.
