Sovanphum Guesthouse

I didn’t stay at the guest house, so I can only speak about the restaurant. The food is incredibly good and very reasonably priced. Best Khmer curry I’ve had.

There are two dogs, a cat, and a bird here, in case you’re not keen on pets. The staff were really kind and nice to us, and the breakfast was good: a drink, eggs, and fruit salad. The sheets and towel smelled freshly washed. The location is great, and the double room with a private bathroom was very affordable at $10. Our bathroom did leave a sewage-like smell in the room, and the floor could have been cleaned better. If you’re on a budget and not too picky, it’s a fine option.

The room smelled like sewage, and climbing four floors on the narrow stairs without an elevator was exhausting. I also had a bad experience booking tickets with the owner. She charged extra because it was a holiday, saying few people went to my destination. The van was packed, and she booked me a cheap backseat ticket so she could keep the difference. We were squeezed in for a seven-hour ride. For a few bucks, you’re willing to represent your country this way to tourists visiting for the first time. Shame on you.

The location is great, close to everywhere along the river. The owner is caring and tries to meet your needs, breakfast is available until 10:00am, and they provide free water bottles daily. The staff are nice too. The room was spacious, with AC, hot water, clean towels, and a good bed. The front room had muted sunlight and natural light. The atmosphere was cordial and service excellent. The only issue was the washroom smell, which you often notice in downtown areas of cities like Phnom Penh, Saigon, or Jakarta.
