Siem Reap Urban Boutique Hotel

There’s plenty to like about the location: Pub Street, good restaurants, bars, and convenience stores are nearby, and the building is nice. But the bugs made this a terrible stay. There were lots of cockroaches and insects. One night I woke up feeling something tickle my arm, though I didn’t know what it was at the time and was already afraid it might be a bedbug. Another evening, while watching a movie, I found a bedbug on the bed, collected it, and showed reception the next morning. They just did the regular room cleaning, which won’t deal with bedbugs. At 2:30 am another night, I woke to something on my leg, turned on the lights, and found another bedbug, plus a second one in the bed and other insects. I collected them all and showed reception in the morning. They changed my room. Also, don’t take a ride to the bus stop arranged by the hotel. You’ll be scammed and pay double. Book your own driver with grab or Pass App, which is even cheaper, and save the difference for a beer or two.

We stayed for over a week. The hotel was peaceful, and the staff were friendly without being in our way. There’s free drinking water, and the pool is lovely and quite deep. There are only stairs, so ask for 1rst floor. Lots of restaurants are right outside, along with bars selling 50c beers. The window view isn’t much, and there’s no hot water for a bath. The fridge and kettle work. You can bring food in from outside, too. I was worried after reading a review saying you couldn’t, but we often brought leftovers and had no problem. The staff were great, but the hotel itself was awful. The bathroom was filthy and clearly needed a lot of maintenance.

The location was the best part. Pub Street, restaurants, bars, massage places and nail salons are all an easy walk away, with Western, pizza and Khmer food nearby at great prices. Staff were friendly and quick to respond, the pool looked clean, and the rates were $17 a night or $18 on weekends. They offered mosquito repellent if asked, and had parking for four cars out front, with more at a sister hotel about a block away. The cockroaches were a serious problem. We were killing large, medium and small ones every day, some with eggs, across several rooms my family had booked. My wife woke up with one crawling on her, and we slept with the lights on to keep them away from our luggage. There were also lots of mosquitoes, though that may be expected in this area. For two of our four nights, there was no warm or hot water. When I called, they explained the heater ran on solar and fixed it, but only for one shower before the water went cold again. The tub was stained, the curtain had mold along the bottom, and the drain plug was broken and detached. The clogged shower head sprayed in several directions, and its attachment couldn't be adjusted, so I had to hold it. One family member's room didn't have an attachment at all. Towels were paper thin, like rags, and mine even had holes. The Wi-Fi was extremely slow. The room TV seemed to be connected to nothing, and when I turned it on, I found a cockroach on the screen. There were no umbrellas by the pool, despite what the photos showed, and the bar was never open. I really don't recommend staying here. The owner needs to invest in basic improvements and proper health and sanitation standards.
