The gardens and greenery make the place beautiful, and the owner’s agriculture background shows. Vegetables from the gardens are used in the meals. The team at Terau Beach Bungalow are so welcoming and looked after us like family. They can also arrange a Tarawa tour to see the WW2 sights or a trip to other outer islands. I spent several nights here with a friend, and it was an amazing change of pace. Kiribati may not suit every traveler, but if you want an adventurous break instead of a typical luxury holiday, I’d recommend Terau Beach Bungalow. You can put away your phone, enjoy nature, and get a real feel for the culture. I left feeling refreshed. They can help arrange all kinds of activities, from snorkelling, fishing, and cycling through villages to weaving traditional materials and learning from friendly locals how to make todi from coconut sap. There are climate positive activities too, like planting mangroves and coconut trees in certain areas to help fight climate change.

Our hosts met us at the airport and took us to the wharf for our boat when it was time to leave. We also hired a couple of old motorbikes and explored this beautiful, unspoilt island. The food was great, and so was the hospitality. They even welcomed us with chilled fresh coconuts. The traditional buias above the sea are magical, and the beds were comfortable. A wonderful place if you’re up for an adventure!

I booked just 2 nights and really should have stayed 4 here and only 3 in Tarawa. On the way back I took a speed boat to Tarawa. It was a fun ride, though not as exciting as the flight. The flight came in on a tiny plane that landed on a grassy strip between palm trees. It felt like a movie scene, minus the bad guys. A local guy picked me up on a motorbike and took me to the bungalow. If you contact the property, they connect you with a local agent who handles flights, transport, and logistics, so you can relax. The staff were kind, and everything was simple in a good way. The homemade food was fresh and delicious, and every meal felt made with care. The bungalows sit right over the water. With the gentle waves and fresh ocean breeze, I slept 12 hours straight my first night. It’s peaceful, authentic, and surrounded by beautiful nature. I’d highly recommend the trip if you want to unwind and disconnect.

The location is unreal, the food is great, and the service was very good, even though the staff couldn’t really speak English. There wasn’t much privacy. Because of the language difficulty, the island tour felt a bit useless for the high price. I also wasn’t met at the wharf, which left me confused as a foreigner on a small atoll.

The hosts were very friendly, and the toilets and showers were clean and nice. There’s a community hall where you can relax, have a good dinner, and charge your phone whenever you need to. The place is 80A$ for a couple, including breakfast, which is quite high for something basic, though everything has to be brought in from South Tarawa. The bamboo bungalows are on the water, and it’s a nice place. The jetty or ferry point is within walking distance, and the airstrip is 5 minutes away by motorbike. The entrance is a bit small, and you have to climb into the hut. There’s a mattress on the floor, and the bamboo chairs aren’t very comfortable.
