Seogwipo KAL Hotel

Although many five-star hotels have opened since, this was the first five-star hotel in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, and politicians and tycoons have favored it. The building is old, so the rooms are small.

The views of the ocean and Mt. Hallasan were the standout for me when I stayed with my high school friends. The hotel has a direct connection to the Olle Trail, and Jeongbang Waterfall is only a seven-minute walk away. It's a good base for seeing the area, with friendly staff and convenient amenities. The facilities are showing their age, but the location and scenery make up for that. A lovely place to unwind in southern Jeju.

The Palor Suite was huge, the bed was comfortable, and the views were phenomenal. We could watch the squid catches each night while looking out over the garden. The gardens themselves are beautiful and so well kept, and I could've spent the whole trip there. The hotel and rooms are dated, but they didn't feel old, and everything was clean and maintained as expected. Staff were experienced, friendly and always ready to help. I was disappointed the outdoor pool was empty because it wasn't the right season. I'd definitely return. The central location is good too.

The Olle Trail around the hotel and out to the volcanic rocks nearby was my favorite part. It's a bit slippery, so watch your step. The paths connect with trails elsewhere on the island, and the garden and views outside are gorgeous. With a rental car, the location and service are fantastic, and the price is a great deal. The hotel is older, with a small indoor pool and gym. Food is good but a little overpriced; airline miles can be used, or there are plenty of restaurants and cafes a short drive or walk away, plus an impressive local night market. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the outdoor pool, though it sometimes closes, so call ahead if that's important to you. The beaches were fine for us.
