Olle Stay

The people in the canteen and dorm area were wonderful, friendly and willing to help even though they didn’t speak English. Big thanks to them. My stay could have been five stars if not for one unpleasant encounter at reception. The short-haired woman in a mask and cap who handles certificates spoke Korean without trying to communicate another way or checking whether I understood. She made no eye contact and seemed much less respectful than her lovely colleagues. She was noticeably more patient with Korean guests than with foreigners, which left me feeling weird and confused. Maybe something had happened to her that morning, but this was my only negative experience in Jeju. Everyone else I met at the hostel and on my hikes was friendly and polite. I don’t expect communication to be easy across a language barrier, but someone working in tourism and representing the Olle community in Jeju should show foreigners the same respect and welcome.

The dorms are very clean and comfortable, and there’s loads of information about getting to the different Olle trails around the island. It isn’t much of a social place, since it’s meant as a resting stop for hikers. The dorms are gender segregated. I’d definitely stay here again.

The local art and locally made goods give this hostel/guesthouse a strong connection to the area, and the comfort and small details are thoughtfully handled. It’s a little pricier than similar places nearby. Still, if you’re walking the Olle Trail, the downstairs restaurant and gift shop are worth a visit. It’s an impressive local tourism project.

A handy base for sharing Olle Trail information, and the cafeteria is good. This is the trail’s main center and guest house. Just be aware it closes early, maybe around 10 pm.
