I booked months ahead, then got word shortly before the stay that part of our reservation would be canceled because they were overbooked. I understand these things happen, but their response was incredibly rude and came with no apology or explanation. They offered no help or compensation at all. I've never had an experience like it. They don't value their guests, so don't book here.

We booked a private room and found it clean and comfortable. The hosts were polite and welcoming, and it was a good place to stay.

The reception staff didn't speak English, but they were always helpful. I stayed several days and loved the hostel. It was very clean and quiet, with all the conveniences a traveler needs. Each capsule has its own light and a hook for hanging a towel, and the women's room has a private bathroom inside. Lockable lockers are outside the rooms. For large backpacks or suitcases, there's a bigger shared locker, also lockable, with the key available at reception. The common area is spacious, with tables for eating or working and beanbags, and the kitchen is well equipped. My backpack was too heavy, so they let me leave a small one at the hostel for a few days while I traveled elsewhere. It's outside the central area, but well located near mini-markets, restaurants, a large supermarket, metro stations on either side, and bus stops. Almaty is easy to get around by public transport, so I thought the value for money made up for the location. I loved staying here and recommend it to other travelers.

Kochevnik turned out to be just what I needed after arriving in Almaty and spending a while looking for a hostel. I liked it a lot. Now I know where I can get a warm, cozy night's stay whenever I'm in your city.
