The location is the one drawback. Totem is in a residential neighborhood, about two blocks too far west to count as truly central. Still, the nearest bus stop is only about 150 meters away. The staff can arrange a taxi after some Google translating and/or semaphore, and Uber has a presence in Shymkent, though it’s still nascent. The beds are among the most comfortable you may find in Kazakhstan, the showers are among the best in this price range in Central Asia, and there are thoughtful touches like a soft bathrobe and beautiful ceramic artwork that may be house-made. Breakfast was great too. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and can help even if you know only basic Russian or Kazakh. I felt comfortable and relaxed, especially after hours of roughing it in a marshrutka to and from Türkistan. If you’re in Shymkent on your way from or to Tashkent, the national parks, or Türkistan, I can’t think of a better place to land or return to. I’d stay again and recommend it to other people passing through.

The rooms were big and clean, the food was nice, and the price was good. It’s a little far from the city, but that’s reflected in the price. A good stay.

The balconies have a lovely view, and the interior has an interesting look. It’s a small hotel with cozy rooms that have what you need, and the staff are polite and helpful. Breakfast is simple with little choice, though what’s served tastes good. Prices are good; the location is just average.
