The staff did their best and weren’t at fault, but this was one of my worst hotel stays, especially for what I expected and paid. It cost USD 500 for two nights in the Junior Suite. I’ve traveled a lot in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines, and at USD 250 a night I’d normally expect a much more polished experience. Breakfast was the one real highlight. Even so, at that price, fresh-squeezed orange juice would have been preferable to juice from a carton. The room wasn’t the advertised 45 square meters, and the bathroom was disappointing, badly in need of upkeep and renovation. The details felt cheap too: IKEA plastic toiletry bottles instead of branded products or even decent ceramic dispensers. I suppose that fits with the Swedish ownership. They clearly rely on the location, but Luang Prabang sits on a peninsula between two rivers, so about half the places have a river view. It isn’t a private bank either. There’s a street and park between the hotel and the water, and people often stare up at the balcony. I left feeling the stay was a waste of money and a disappointment. There are plenty of other nice places in LP, either at half the price or with a much higher standard.

The location was peaceful, and getting to the busier part took only a 10-15 minute walk. Free bicycles were available around the clock, and breakfast came with the stay. It was served across the road in the restaurant, with a lovely river view and a decent selection. The staff were very friendly. Our room was clean and good, though a little dated, which I think suits Luang Prabang’s charm. I’d definitely stay here again.

The service was good, so that wasn’t the issue. The place badly needs renovation: the bathrooms haven’t been updated in years, and the rooms smell a bit musty. You can tell it must have been beautiful once. It could be lovely again if the owner invested in it.

We wanted to get away from fast food and a rushed lifestyle, and the Mekong Riverview Hotel turned out to be just the retreat we needed. If your diet is mostly KFC or Burger King at home or abroad, Luang Prabang may not suit you. There aren’t water parks or jet skis here either. The hotel sits where the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers meet, in Luang Prabang’s UNESCO World Heritage site. We stayed four nights, and it was even better than the glowing online reviews and YouTube videos led us to expect. Our room’s décor fit the historic setting, and the rain shower, spa bath, and wrap-around balcony made it easy to spend hours enjoying the quiet and solitude we came for. The hotel can take you to the busier part of town, and free bicycles are available if you’d rather ride. Breakfast is included at the restaurant across the street, on the Nam Khan River bank. We enjoyed a bowl of local rice soup as the fog lifted from the hilltops across the Mekong. The stay has really stuck with us, and we’d highly recommend experiencing it for yourself.

We had a small problem with the shower head, and they immediately moved us to a much nicer room at no extra charge instead of making us wait for maintenance. The staff were incredible and helpful with all our questions. There are free bikes for getting around when you’ve had enough walking, and lots of good restaurants, the night market, and the boat dock are a short stroll away. We’ll definitely return to the Mekong Riverview next time we’re in Luang Prabang!
