We spent more than three weeks in a villa and enjoyed making most of our meals in the kitchen. Our deck off the living area was lovely, often breezy, and looked out over beautiful Marigot Bay. The small pool was nice, and you can swim in the ocean if you keep clear of the boats. Staff were helpful and engaged. The villa itself was fine, with AC only in the bedroom and no TV, which we knew when we booked, so plan something else for evenings. Getting around on foot was tough for me, since I like to stay active. The roads are steep, busy, and have few sidewalks, and the nature trail felt precarious even in proper shoes. We had a car for grocery trips and restaurants, and hoped to see more of the island, but the roads are rough and people advised us against driving at night. Noise was the biggest surprise. Roosters on the beach below started crowing at 3 a.m. every day, often with dogs barking, and music from the karaoke bar and other spots across the bay carried at night. The villa windows don’t block sound at all. Management can’t control other businesses or people’s dogs, but I wish the noise level had been mentioned before we booked.
There’s a boat from the main apartment area to the resort island where Doolittles Restaurant is located. That’s where the original Dr Doolittle film with Rex Harrison was shot. Back the other way, JJs Restaurant is a spot for a quiet, intimate evening and a cocktail or two. The setting is beautiful and luxurious.
The bay never gets quiet, with noise going on constantly. Not peaceful at all. Stay away.
The setting is superb and quiet, and the staff made our stay special. Renata has a great team: Shellann, sorry if I’ve misspelled it, was sharp and professional; Nathalia looked after breakfast in the Hole; Alison was queen of the pool bar, and Adjae was the chef there. Nick and Andre made great cocktails, while Alethea and Dave welcomed us at the restaurant. Max’s yoga classes were a joy. Genesis and Rochele checked in and took care of us every day. I also appreciated that allergies were taken seriously. The rooms feel bland and impersonal, without a single picture on the walls. We had bedding that seemed a little too small or short for the bed, and it took a couple of days to get housekeeping to fix it. We also had to ask for coffee pods almost every day for the in-room espresso machine. The two gym treadmills weren’t working during our two-week stay. A little more attention to these small details would go a long way.
The sunsets are gorgeous, and you can sit for hours watching sailboats come and go. It’s a beautiful, secluded bay, though there isn’t much to do nearby and the road in is in pretty bad shape. The beach isn’t very good either. There are much better ones elsewhere.
