The restaurant Maree alone would make me stay here again. Both of the best dinners my daughter and I had during our nine-day drive through Switzerland were there. The menu was exciting to read, and the food lived up to it. The service was top-notch, too. From the moment we arrived, the staff at Park Hotel Sonnenhof Superior treated us like royalty. The whole hotel was spotless, and our room felt cozy and warm, with beautiful marble bathroom countertops. I’ve just redone my own house, so I know a bit about that. We stayed in everything from luxury accommodation in Gstaad to rustic, out-of-the-way inns, and none impressed us as much as this lovely family place. If I’m ever within 100 miles, I’ll make a point of staying the night and having dinner. It was that good.

The room price dispute left me shaking with stress. We’d booked by email for a conference, and after we arrived, the hotel wanted nearly twice the agreed price, far above the rates on its official website. The emails set a price, said nothing about how many people would be staying, and didn’t mention a room occupancy limit. We’d told them before arrival that we were a husband and wife needing one bed. When we checked with the receptionist, she denied what the email said until we challenged her, then still insisted on the inflated fee. With Liechtenstein accommodation, as the hotel surely knew, booked up for the conference, it felt tantamount to extortion. Maybe wealthy clients agree to that sort of thing quickly, but we’re both travel journalists for top publications and had never had a hotel raise the price after we’d arrived, even after decades of travel. We stayed calm and asked to speak to a manager so we could sort it out. She refused, saying she didn’t know where he was and wouldn’t look for him, and wouldn’t give us her name. She’d been hostile from the start despite my calm tone, then threatened to badmouth my husband to the conference organizers if we didn’t pay. My husband told me to pay the extra. I said I’d report her to her manager and Relais & Chateaux, and dispute the charge through AMEX. Then she admitted the extra fees had no basis and corrected the bill. The hotel itself was passable but nothing special, unless you’re happy paying a small fortune for food, like 20 euros for a bowl of watery tomato soup. Possibly the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had.

We had such a relaxing, welcoming start to our trip. The service was among the kindest, most generous, and most helpful I’ve experienced. Our room was clean, comfortable, and practical, with enough space for two adults and one child, or two children if they’re happy sharing a bed. We enjoyed the breakfast, landscaping, views, chocolate, and pool. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Maria deserves a special mention. She’s excellent at her job, attentive to detail, and goes above and beyond to help guests. We’re taking home special holiday snowflake decorations because of her, and they’ll always remind us of our stay in Lichtenstein. We enjoyed four nights here. We began in junior suite #36, but chose the offered superior room #58 instead. It was cheaper, quieter, and on a higher floor, with a better view of the castle and mountains, tasteful decor, and a very nice walk-in shower. We’d suggest booking that room if you prefer a walk-in shower. Breakfast had a wonderful range, including delicious fruit and pastries. The made-to-order omelets were the best we had on our entire two-week trip. On the first day, we had both lunch and dinner at the hotel. Both meals were delicious, served in a beautiful dining room with nice service. We’d considered half board for the whole stay, but found the arrangement confusing. Ask about the menu, since it’s customized each night from the regular restaurant menu. It’s four courses, but not the same four-course meal offered on the restaurant menu. We ate elsewhere for the next two nights to try local places. Torkel, an easy walk downhill from Park Hotel Sonnenhof, was outstanding for its service, food, and atmosphere. On our last night, we ate back at the hotel, choosing from the snack menu after also snacking at Christmas markets. The truffle soup and seasonal salad were very good. The homemade spring rolls were okay, but I’d choose something else for the price. I rated the location four stars because it’s uphill. Walking down is easy, and bus #11 is convenient for getting to Sargans for train service, but the climb back up each day was a workout. The hotel did a nice job arranging a car to and from Sargans for our train.

Our only complaint is that we had just one night here. The staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful, and spoke fluent English. The hotel and grounds were spotless and felt luxurious throughout. The spa was calm and relaxing, with refreshments available. Staff kept checking in and made sure it was clean, tidy, and well supplied. Room service was prompt and very good. Breakfast was included, with one of the best selections we’ve seen. You could order fresh pancakes, waffles, eggs, omelets, and more. Premium quality, and the highlight of our trip. If we could, we’d give it 10 stars all around!
