The River House by Asia Leisure

That evening by the river was lovely, with birds calling and boats drifting far off in the view. My husband and I both enjoyed the warm atmosphere. We stayed in the spacious pool suit, which gave us plenty of privacy, and the food was incredibly delicious. The service was so kind and quick, and we loved it. The next morning we took a two-hour boat ride on Madhu River. The hotel recommended the boat guy, who took us to more than 7 islands, and we also got fish therapy. It was an unforgettable trip and felt well worth it. We had a wonderful time at River house, and would highly recommend it.

The price set our expectations high, but the place and service didn't live up to it. This is an old house converted into a villa, and the beds in the triple/quadruple room are like hostel bunk beds. The creek is so loud that you can hear it when someone sleeping moves around. There was no hot water in the bathroom after 8 PM. Lunch was fried rice and chicken, which felt absurd for the price. You could get that for Rs 400 at a shop outside. The staff seemed stretched very thin. The waiter didn't understand what we were saying, water glasses weren't refilled, and we had to ask for dessert before they brought it. Some guests left without dessert. I know running a business isn't easy, but the prices should reflect the facilities and service so guests don't arrive with such high expectations.

The peaceful surroundings and good pool were the only real positives for us. We stayed at Walawuva, and the place felt run down and poorly maintained. Even the toilets wouldn't flush properly, and the food choices were very limited. I don't understand the hype, and it wasn't worth what they charge. The photos online don't match the actual place, so think twice before booking.

We stayed in the "Gin" room, one of the largest rooms I've seen in a Sri Lankan hotel. It was spotless and very spacious, with its own private pool, and the main pool was clean too. The garden was lovely, and the food tasted good. Staff were welcoming and helpful, and were happy to adjust meals for our dietary needs. It's a peaceful, beautiful spot for a relaxing holiday, and the tidy, well-kept grounds make it good for families or groups of friends. The hotel can arrange a tour of the Madu Ganga from the back. Get directions from the hotel before setting off, though, because the Google Maps route is wrong.
