Abhaya Mandapa Hotel

We were there for two nights, 11 to 13 March, in a room furnished very thoughtfully with natural materials. The hotel is right by the lake, with temples visible across the water. Meals seem aimed at South Asian guests, so breakfast is mostly savory. Some dishes were especially good, including the mushroom curry served once at the breakfast buffet and the sambol. The staff live on site, which is convenient, though I sometimes had to follow up about meal orders. Manager Prasanna was warm and welcoming.

The setting at Abaya Mandapaya felt calm and almost spiritual, with architecture that sits beautifully in nature. Waking up to those peaceful views was lovely, and the rooms were spacious, elegant, and spotless, with thoughtful details. Staff were warm and attentive, and the food was delicious and nicely presented. It’s a place to relax and recharge, and the whole visit felt special. Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to return.

We enjoyed the vegetarian meals, especially breakfast, and appreciated that dinner and breakfast times could be adjusted to suit us. The rooms were clean, with excellent bathrooms, hot and cold water, plenty of fresh towels, working AC and a ceiling fan. High ceilings and pleasant lighting made them comfortable. We didn’t use the wide choice of free TV channels, but liked having them. From the balcony, we could see Abaya Weewa across the street and four stupas. The manager answered honestly when we asked about mosquitoes, advising us to keep the balcony door closed. We didn’t actually see any in the room. The staff were helpful and attentive, and the location is great. Cross the road to the path along the Abhaya Wewwa Bund for beautiful views in the morning, at sunset, and at night.

The early morning and nighttime views were amazing, especially the four Sthupas: Ruwanweliseya, Mirisawetiya, Sandahiru seya, and Jethavanaramaya. The location, clean room, balcony view, friendly staff, and delicious meals all made this my best stay in Anuradhapura so far. They serve only vegetarian food, which suited the religious setting, and there’s a specific place to prepare "Kiriahara" if you wish. If you bring the ingredients, the staff will make it for you respectfully. They were kind, always smiling, and quick to help with anything. This felt more like home than a hotel. My family and I feel lucky we found it, and can plan another trip without worry. Thanks for such a warm stay.
