The grounds of this old colonial property are beautiful and well kept, perhaps because they are used for wedding photographs. Inside, though, the hotel felt neglected: the rooms were tired and run down, and even the front desk still used a dot matrix printer. We were looking forward to our stay, so the repeated discomforts were a real letdown. Some staff were warm and helpful, while others seemed unconcerned about guest comfort, perhaps because they were trainees. We were first given a horrible room right beside the dining room, though the hotel was empty, and it was changed after we complained. Nobody warned us about an early morning wedding shoot that disturbed us. We also weren't told that we'd need to request room cleaning. On the first evening, a helpful staff member burned a couple of bowls of oil to keep mosquitoes away while we sat outside with an early drink. The next night, another staff member was positively hostile when we asked for the same thing. Any one of those issues might have been easy to overlook during a good stay. Together, all the discomfort and niggles made this disappointing, especially when it could have been fantastic.

We stopped in just for lunch, starting with drinks on the balcony. The dining room was lovely, and the meals were spectacular. Prices weren't at the European level some hotels charge in other Sri Lankan towns, and the service was incredibly attentive. The staff also showed genuine interest in our family. A beautiful spot for lunch.

During our bike tour around the temples, we took a superb break at this colonial-style hotel in the middle of a garden. We sat in the shade and enjoyed a delicious club sandwich. The staff were great too.

Peacocks wandering freely through the beautiful garden give The Sanctuary at Tissawewa a serene, picturesque feel. The property has a lot of history too, having been used by an ex-British governor in the 1900s. It's easy to reach from the city and conveniently close to Anuradhapura's sacred places. Breakfast was a real treat, with a wide selection of home-cooked food for different tastes. The food overall was amazing, and the prices felt reasonable for the quality and experience. The staff were friendly and always ready to help with a smile. I'd highly recommend it for its blend of history, nature and good hospitality.

The garden is lovely, the staff are really helpful, and the food is so, so good. The hotel has a great history and location, just 15 min to the pagodas. The rooms are good, though the shower area could be a bit more modern. Resident rates are much better than tourist rates. At tourist rates, it's a bit overpriced, e.g. 130USD/night booking.com. We'll definitely come back.
