SURF AND SAND Hotel - Arugam Bay

A relaxed little place with really helpful, friendly staff. The free breakfast was fresh, with juice and something different each day. It’s basic, but worked great as a place for us to stay while exploring the area.

The balcony looked straight onto the building next door, and there were no tea or coffee facilities. We also had no toilet paper and no water for a shower. It wasn’t beachfront, either. When we arrived, the manager wasn’t there and took 20 minutes to come after we called. He came across as arrogant and didn’t tell us anything about the Wi-Fi or breakfast times. We were very disappointed and left soon after.

The owner was kind when I got sick. He brought me his special tea and some bananas, and checked every morning to see if I was feeling better or needed anything. He also explained how to take the bus to Ella, changing in Monaragala, and said to ask him about the departure times. The rooms were spacious, though a bit old, and the towels and linens were clean. Breakfast was tasty, but leaned more Western than local. It’s a 2-3 minute walk to the beach and a nice sunset spot by the village entrance. Baby Point and Main Point take 20-30 minutes on foot. We did have to switch rooms partway through, but doing it after breakfast was no trouble. The stay was good, though for the price we had expected a little more.

The breakfasts were a highlight, Uncle would make them how we wanted and bring fresh fruit juice every day. He even packed idlis for us when we had to leave for the airport very early. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the place felt like home and was good value. It’s just across the road from the beach, away from the noisier town centre. We had a great stay and can’t wait to return to A bay. 💛
