The Villa Bentota by KK Collection

We booked this hotel over the phone and never saw the room beforehand. They sent no booking confirmation. When we arrived at 8:30 pm, they asked us to pay in full before showing us the room, and we trusted them. We had been inside for only five seconds when we told the reception staff member who showed us the room that we didn't like it and wanted another. They said a move to a higher room would cost extra. We asked for a refund because we weren't satisfied, but they insisted on keeping the payment and said it was up to us whether to stay. We hadn't used anything in the room, and our luggage was still in the lobby. This was the worst hotel experience of my life. They refused to solve the problem or refund us. When the front desk manager came later, he argued with us and forced us to accept the terms. The management's attitude was truly regrettable, even though the excellent design of this early Bawa-designed hotel, later leased and operated by a British designer, has been continued. Dear Mr. Cooper, please be aware that the seaside location means dampness, including on the walls. The refusal to refund guests unhappy with their room and the forceful attitude strongly suggested racial discrimination to us. They were extremely kind to white Europeans and Americans but treated Asians as though it was simply up to them to stay, with no refund. On several occasions, they spoke to colleagues in the local language in front of us, and his expression seemed mocking. We wanted to enjoy a good stay in a Bawa hotel, but this is how they treated us.

The food deserves a mention too. It was absolutely delicious, with the best curries we've had anywhere. We loved staying at The Villa Bentota so much that we're coming back next year. The villa and grounds are beautiful, we loved the train, and the beach is amazing. But what stood out most was the delightful staff, so friendly, helpful, and welcoming. They couldn't have done more for us.

The grounds are wonderful, with lovely artwork, and the villa was designed by a famous Sri Lankan architect. The staff were amazing and the food delicious. We found it very relaxing, with direct beach access over the railway line at the bottom of the garden and several beach bars within walking distance. We'd recommend it and would stay again if we're in the area.

Our guests had overwhelmingly positive things to say. Everyone felt comfortable and looked after, and they were impressed by the atmosphere and stunning location. Villa Bentota is breathtaking, and it will always stay in our hearts. We celebrated our wedding there and couldn't have picked a more beautiful, special place. Everything was organized perfectly from the start, and the team made us feel welcome, relaxed, and cared for. Special thanks to Mr. Kalpa, whose dedication, professionalism, and warm personality made a real difference. The staff were friendly and attentive, the rooms wonderful, and the food amazing.
