The staff made our 48 hours here feel special. They arranged trips, brought a bench for us to use outside the bathroom's back door, and were always happy to share the hotel's history. We left feeling we'd made new friends. Thank you to everyone, especially Lalin the Manager. We hope to return. My mother and I will remember this lovely hotel as a highlight of our time in Sri Lanka. This former British colonial oasis sits in the heart of Bandarawela, with a peaceful atmosphere, a lovely garden, comfortable rooms, and a lot of history. Our back room was quiet, and we weren't disturbed by the nearby mosque. We were welcomed in the drawing room with ginger tea and truffles, then shown to a room full of charming old details: century-old light switches, a huge brass key, metal frame beds, a mahogany wardrobe, and a roll top bath. The buffet meals were generous, varied, and delicious. The Chef also made special food for us several times. It's a handy base for Ella, the Mahamevnawa monastery, tea plantations, Adison Monastery, and more.

On a Mercury tour of Sri Lanka, my wife and I had a completely vegan lunch here, prepared especially for us. Head chef Gamunu clearly understands different dietary needs. Everything tasted good, especially the roasted garlic and tomato soup and the coconut cream green beans curry. The Bandarawela Hotel is a lovely historic place to visit, with welcoming staff. It also makes a good base for touring. Highly recommended.

The hotel is right next to a mall, which was really convenient. My husband and I stayed one night at Bandarawela Hotel and loved the spacious room. The staff have done a great job keeping its charm, and the mutton biryani was the best we had here!

The service and food were outstanding, and the grounds were well kept, much as I found elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Still, the rooms felt dated rather than authentic to me, and the cleanliness of the carpets and bedspreads is questionable, even though the rooms themselves are clean. Showering in a bathtub could also be unsafe for older guests. A mosque down the street calls for prayer around 5 am, though that's not the hotel's fault. This English colonial-style hotel really does evoke its period, so someone seeking that authentic feel might give it five stars. I was sold a hotel as part of a round trip, though, and I'm rating it as a hotel. The room amenities left me puzzled: tea and coffee, but no kettle because of the wiring, and no usual fridge or air-conditioning, just a ceiling fan. For one night it's a great experience, but it makes me question the three-star rating and the other three-star hotels I've stayed in.

We called ahead before coming for the dinner buffet, and the tables were set up properly for our group. Since they don't usually expect a large buffet crowd, letting the restaurant know in advance makes things easier for everyone. It was a pleasant fine dining experience.
