The small courtyard areas were beautifully put together, and I was struck by how personal the place felt. Being there gave me a moving glimpse into Geoffrey Bawa’s life and journey as an architect. I also admired how, in his later years, he stayed committed to his own style while bringing together such a varied art collection on his own. The Bawa Residence was easily the highlight of my Colombo trip. You can stay overnight in the guest room, but you need to book ahead. I’m planning to reserve it for my next visit.

The tour costs 5000KLR per person. The administrator is glad to help you explore and explain the different areas. After he gives a basic introduction to each place, you can ask him about anything you’re particularly curious about. The Bawa Mansion is well preserved. The video room could use better picture and sound quality. The old film does give it a retro feel, though. The chairs also felt too unsteady for me to sit back and relax properly.

The guided tour gave me a much better feel for Geoffrey Bawa’s ideas and approach. The residence itself makes a strong impression even if you aren’t staying there. As you walk around, you notice how carefully everything has been arranged, from the courtyards to the way daylight moves through the rooms. Bawa’s style comes through in the way the architecture and nature fit together. If you’re nearby and interested in design, architecture, or calm, beautiful places, it’s well worth a visit.

A relaxed, easygoing tour that takes about 45 minutes. Really informative if you work in architecture or design, and highly recommended.

I loved the house, but the tour felt brief and overcrowded. I was disappointed that photos weren’t allowed in the living areas, including the living room and bedroom.
