The Backwaters

We booked a private safari through the lodge and had an unforgettable time seeing so many animals and taking in Sri Lanka’s wildlife. On our first evening, we also went on a great boat tour and saw birds and bats among the beautiful scenery. Our guide was kind, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about nature. We spent several nights at Backwaters Lodge Wilpattu and loved the peaceful natural surroundings. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the restaurant served delicious food with local flavors. The staff were exceptionally kind and caring. We’d happily recommend a stay here to anyone visiting Wilpattu.

The afternoon by the river was a real highlight, with jungle sounds all around us. Backwater Lodge is right by the river in a fantastic jungle setting near Wilpattu, and it felt incredibly peaceful. We also loved that the lodge is eco-friendly. Lakshi gave us such a warm, fun welcome. The food was excellent each day, with delicious local dishes made less spicy for tourists, and they packed us a great picnic to take on safari.

The river deck at sunset, with a cold beer in hand, is a memory I’ll keep for a long time. We stayed three nights at The Backwater, on the river’s edge and less than five minutes from Wilpattu National Park. The whole place was wonderfully peaceful, with birds, peacocks, and monkeys audible from our private deck. Rooms are converted shipping containers, spaced well apart for comfort and privacy. The food was delicious, well prepared, and offered lots of choice. We made the most of the activities: a morning jeep safari from 6.30-12, a five-mile walk to and from Lily pond for birdwatching, and kayaking on the river. You can also do a full-day safari. On our last day, Lakshmi kindly coordinated a dolphin-watching trip before we headed east. Tarik welcomed us warmly, and manageress Lakshmi was amazing and efficient. Hijas, Ikram, and Daas looked after our every need. Everyone’s hospitality made this stay so memorable. Five stars PLUS.

The food and service were great, but the room was a letdown. It smelled of sewage and was full of mosquitoes, and the bed felt improvised and small for two. The value for money wasn’t good, and we didn’t get enough useful advice in advance to plan our activities better. I’d have preferred to stay farther from the park entrance and enjoy the area more.
