potato House (土豆客栈)

A lovely, well-decorated hostel inside and out, and the best one I stayed in during my whole two-month trip. The AC rooms are good value for the price. Breakfast was nice, with bread, omelette, fruit, and milk tea. I especially liked the milk tea. Highly recommend!

I’ve had that experience where somewhere has glowing reviews, then you get there and can’t see why. That was a bit how this stay felt for me. The bedroom had a good bed and working AC, and the simple breakfast with fresh fruit was nice. The shared bathroom is large, but you can only reach it through the living room, which was annoying. Dogs barking at night came through almost completely, with very little sound insulation. I raised some issues with the host before posting, and some things will be addressed. During my stay the WiFi was awful, about 0.1 Mbit, so even opening TripAdvisor or basic websites was nearly impossible. The listing also didn’t say that one of the housekeepers/aunts would sleep on the couch at night. It felt a bit awkward passing by them on the way to the bathroom. Their English comprehension was very limited, which led to confusion and frustration over simple things, though I can forgive that. The listing gives the right location, but there’s really nothing nearby, not even a restaurant. Plan your meals or buy groceries to cook in the kitchen if you don’t want to rely on tuktuks. The bedroom price didn’t feel matched by the quality for me, although some things have since been sorted out. If you know what you’re looking for in accommodation, it could still suit you.

Mo Sun is a hospitable host, and Potato and tomato are lovely pets :)
