Tabula Rasa Resort & Spa

The team was genuinely friendly and professional, and they clearly tried their best. My concerns are with the hotel’s management choices and the value for money. We stayed at Tabula Rasa Resort & Spa on Hilton Honors points as Diamond members, but the recognition was minimal, essentially just complimentary breakfast. The property is beautiful and has a great view, though its location is inconvenient. Prices also felt out of step with what was provided. The USD 18 pork chop was nicely presented but tiny, and a Coke Zero from the minibar cost USD 4, compared with about USD 1 at similar Hilton properties in the same country. Breakfast was disappointing for a resort with this kind of positioning. The menu was small and had little variety, which became an issue over several days. À la carte dining also didn’t feel premium. Bathrobes were limited to higher room categories, and there were no umbrellas in the room, which was inconvenient in this climate. With better value, inclusions, and a clearer overall concept, this could be a much better experience.

I spent a very relaxing time by my private pool, reading and watching wildlife in the jungle. Galle Fort is around a 20-minute tuk tuk ride away, and there’s a lovely sea turtle sanctuary nearby. The restaurant food was incredible, both Sri Lankan and western, and I also loved drinks at the pool bar. The Sri Lankan delight cashews were very moreish. On arrival, the villa had been scented with sweet spices, and the welcome fruit juice was incredible. It all made the place feel inviting and sophisticated. I enjoyed every minute and hope to return one day.

The resort’s quiet, isolated setting made it feel like a real escape, and we enjoyed the good food and a wonderful cooking class. Our room had a lovely view unlike many others we’ve seen, and everything we needed was there. The staff were polite, attentive, and extremely helpful, with a high level of service. The small road to the hotel gave our driver some trouble, but the hotel can arrange short, very cheap tuk tuk rides to deal with that. We’ll come back.

The team is what made this place especially memorable. When we unexpectedly got stuck during a stressful situation, everyone was kind, attentive, and caring, and even arranged a beautifully presented dinner. The owner was warm and present too, which comes through in the atmosphere. We first booked four nights at Tabularasa, but extended our stay several times and returned after leaving. We ended up in four rooms across three categories, and every one was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The property feels like a little natural paradise, with monkeys, mongooses, and birds around, and the pool looks out over the ocean. Meals were consistently fresh and very good, both breakfast and dinner. Nuwan’s massage was one of the best I’ve ever had. We didn’t find anything negative and would happily return.
