Aurora Hotel & Restaurant

The staff are all super friendly, and the rooms, beds, and bathroom were clean. The AC and fan kept the room comfortable overnight, around 20C/68F, though it won't get ice cold. The free Wi-Fi was patchy and weak in the rooms, possibly because there's only one access point in the lobby. There's no TV, if that matters to you. Getting to the beach is easy via a nearby path. Running along the beach was nice, and there weren't many stray dogs. The few around seemed used to people being out and about at all hours. There's a tap beside the stairs to the rooms where you can rinse sand off, which works better than using the shower and keeps sand out of the plumbing. The main drawback is noise from the road. Traffic can be loud until about 23:00 and starts up again around 6:30. Buses and trucks honk as they pass tuk-tuks. Hotels on the north side of the road probably get more of this, since rooms facing the road offer ocean views. Places on the south, beach side may be better shielded from traffic and hear more of the sea. A dog in the neighboring house also barks now and then. It seems to be something people in Sri Lanka don't worry much about, so if you're used to it, it may not bother you. Unfortunate for the Aurora people. The shower pressure was weak, as my father put it, like a dog urinating. There wasn't much choice of temperature either, just what seemed to be the ambient temperature. It wasn't cold, but wasn't hot. It's passable for a short stay. The Sri Lankan breakfast, with hoppers and similar dishes, has to be requested when booking. Otherwise you get the western set of eggs, fruit, and toast. That policy seems a bit silly, and breakfast doesn't start until 8:30, which is late. There's a shop a short walk north for basics like water. Food places begin about 700 meters up the road. There are enough streetlights to make walking at night reasonably easy.

The Wi-Fi and breakfasts are great 😉 They serve fruit plates, fried eggs, toast, and tea or coffee.

Lovely spot close to the beach. The roti is the best, and it's delicious!

The food was amazing, and the staff were so friendly. It's near the city center too, a great place for a holiday.
