Chami's Place

Great setting for a relaxed evening, stylish and in a good location. The Chicken Curry was rich and spiced just right. The Prawns Coconut Mango Curry was the highlight for me, fresh, creamy, and nicely balanced. Fantastic restaurant!

We sat upstairs and even spotted a monkey while we ate. Such a cool vibe, tucked just off Hikkaduwa’s main road. The grilled prawns and fish curry with rice were excellent, and the pina colada was refreshing.

The staff were polite and the atmosphere was fine, but I left disappointed. I had a whole grilled fish here yesterday evening and felt sick later that night. I can’t be certain the meal caused it, though that was my experience.

I loved the music, and I ate at the restaurant a few times in the evenings. Breakfast was included, freshly made each morning with something different each day. The whole place has a cheerful, colourful feel, with art everywhere, and even my private room was fun and well designed. The free WiFi didn’t reach the room, though. If you can, I’d book a private room. Lonely Planet recommended Chamis place, and I’m glad I stayed. It felt like a solid 5-star hostel experience. There was one odd moment when I tried to add a night on my first evening. Someone said I could stay an extra night for free, which I appreciated, but later I wasn’t sure that person was actually a staff member. I suggested checking the security cameras to clear things up, but they didn’t want to, even though they said the cameras worked. They also made no real effort to resolve it or offer compensation. A strange end to a stay I otherwise really enjoyed. I’d still recommend the place for its atmosphere and evening food and drinks.
