Susee is the friendliest, most helpful host I could imagine. He greeted me with a freshly made juice that was one of the tastiest I’ve had. I thought he called it “root apple,” but I couldn’t find that online, so I’ve named it “Susee juice.” It was outstanding. He showed me the gorgeous stretch of beach by his property and pointed out that the most expensive 5-star hotel in Bentota is right next door, so we had the same beach and view for a fraction of the price. My room was nice, the bed comfortable, and it had a mosquito net and wardrobe, neither of which I needed. The air conditioner held a steady, comfortable temperature. The powerful overhead fan got a little too cool in the middle of the night, so I turned it off. Breakfast was fresh and served on schedule each morning, at the time I’d arranged in advance. There was plenty of fruit, rolled pancakes that reminded me of crepes, savory egg-roll-like pastry puffs, and fresh coffee or tea. Dinner was also available on request for a small fee, and I had it both nights. The first evening I had salad, then lots of fresh barbecued prawns with rice and curry. The second was kuthi, if I’ve got the spelling right, a pleasantly spicy nest of stir-fried egg noodles, mushrooms and meats. If you don’t like some heat, you may want to skip that dish. Susee arranged my riverboat safari reservation and drove me to the excursion for free. I saw crocodiles, snakes, water monitors, and lots of birds up close. We stopped at the boatman’s friend’s property, where I got to hold and photograph a baby crocodile. They’re adorable. I want one. The river guide Susee chose was a great spotter, finding green tree snakes and baby crocs I never would’ve noticed myself. In a few hours, Susee is also driving me to the airport, a long trip, for a very reasonable price.
