The lawn and hammocks made it easy to relax, and the room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, too. Jessen, the owner, was away from Sri Lanka but still video-called to welcome me, suggest places to go, and check how things were going. Gloriat guesthouse is a peaceful little spot in Kalpitiya. If you're kitesurfing, you can rent a scooter to get to the lagoon quickly, and there's room outside to rinse and dry your gear. I'd happily recommend it.

A comfortable, reasonably priced base for getting around the peninsula, with both A/C and non A/C rooms. The hosts were friendly, and breakfast was delicious Sri Lankan style. There are rabbits and cats around, plus a very slow turtle to watch. A quiet little oasis in Kalpitiya.

The location worked well for visiting the city, and the tea was good. Staff were friendly, though a bit indolent. The price was decent, too. The room wasn't as clean as the photos suggested, but I was there in the off season while management was away, so it may not usually be that way. I wasn't looking to windsurf, so this place suited me.

The garden was lovely and the people seemed nice, and it's handy for catching buses. But the beach is far away. We paid $17 a night for a cheaper room with a shared roof, bathroom, and toilet, and curtains instead of proper doors. It might have been better in one of the separate rooms with real doors. Choosing that room was one of the worst decisions of our Sri Lanka trip.

The owner, Mitch, is a friendly Swiss man who was glad to help with things to do around Kalpitiya, from kitesurfing to dolphin watching and river safaris. The place has a special feel, with green grass and animals wandering freely, including rabbits, cats, a turtle, and a dog. We even got to feed the turtle tomatoes, which was fun to watch from our hammock. A guesthouse we'll remember, especially if you don't mind staying in town.
