Plantation Retreat worked well as our base for visiting Kandy and setting off on our trip north. It’s an easy walk from Patanpaha station, about an hour from Kandy on the train to Matale. Sarath and Deepthi were wonderful hosts, and the home and two guest cottages were so comfortable. We ate delicious meals in generous portions, and Sarath gave us a free, very informative tour of his spice garden. We highly recommend staying here.

The nearest rail stop is Paththampaha Sub Railway Station, just 75 m away. Sri Dalada Maligawa and Kandy Museum are both 17.6 km from Plantation Retreat, which is also 400 m from Patanpaha Bus Stand. There’s an outdoor pool and free WiFi, plus a garden, barbecue facilities, luggage storage, and laundry. The rooms have air conditioning and Sri Lankan-style décor; some include a TV, and each has an en suite bathroom with a hot-water shower and free toiletries. You can eat authentic Sri Lankan food at the restaurant or have it brought to your room. Rooms also have a wardrobe.

The food they serve was the best I tried in Sri Lanka, and the hostel facilities were great, with everything clean and the bed very comfortable. Ttw hostel is an amazing place, and the owner’s family are so sweet and helpful!

Loved the beautiful surroundings, the tasty food, and being so close to nature. At night you can hear the animals too.
