We spent two nights here, and the stay fell well short of what I expect from a 4-star hotel. The hotel didn't seem busy, but basic service was badly managed. We left the room in the morning on our second day and came back around 6 PM to find housekeeping still cleaning. That was extremely inconvenient after a long day of sightseeing. Breakfast was the worst of the four properties we stayed at on our trip. Flies were on the fruit, the food was cold, and staff seemed more focused on eating their own breakfast than serving guests. The live station seemed to be just for staff: no chef was available while guests were there, but once staff arrived, the chef began cooking for them. It felt like a staff cafeteria, not a guest dining area. The pool towel rule was another problem. We were told towels couldn't go to the room and had to stay at the pool. In the cold weather, that meant walking back to the room in wet clothes, which seemed unreasonable and could make guests sick. We weren't expecting luxury, but basic etiquette, hygiene, and professionalism should be standard at a 4-star property. Management needs to take this seriously.

The staff were efficient and quick to respond. The barman was especially friendly and helpful, the room attendant worked fast and did a great job, and waiter Dilesh made sure we were well fed and watered. Thanks to everyone. This was the best twin room I've ever stayed in, with high ceilings, lots of space, and a lovely balcony where I could listen to birds, read, or video the monkeys.

The place really needs a major upgrade. The food was hit and miss and wasn't hot, and there were lots of flies in the room, with insects and frogs outside. There was at least a ceiling fan, but the aircon didn't work and the shower had no hot water. I asked for towels three times, but none came.

We booked three rooms at a very good rate for the October long weekend, under "Mekhala". The atmosphere was nice, the food was yummy, and the rooms were cleaner than expected. The staff were polite and friendly, especially Mr.Gihan Siriwardene, who took extra care to meet our needs. Thank you, Gihan! We also had to change our departure at short notice for an unavoidable reason, and they let us do it without any extra charge. I highly recommend Mandara Rosen, Kataragama, to anyone planning to visit the area.
