Isana Beach House

The book collection here is incredible, the best curated selection I've come across in similar places anywhere on the PLANET. When Richard Burrows was on site, we really enjoyed talking with him. If I remember right, guests were welcome to take a book to read, though I usually bring my own and leave it behind. We stayed in Yuunagi, one of the two ground-floor rooms and the only rooms with air conditioning. The room was bright, despite complaints I'd read elsewhere, and the WiFi was strong enough for what I needed. The food was quite good, too. I already knew this beach from a previous visit and love its peaceful feel, swimming and walks. My husband and I looked around for better beaches nearby but couldn't find any, and some other guests agreed. We loved our two days at this Beach House and could easily imagine spending a week there. It felt truly magical.

The food was excellent, especially the fish, which they can buy fresh from the market and prepare perfectly if you ask. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere feels like being with family. This is a lovely little hotel with a distinctive Japanese–Sri Lankan architectural style. We've stayed twice and would gladly return.

Our room, Shiosai, and its large bathroom both felt spacious and airy, open to the tropical garden and the almost empty beach. We spent hours on the sunbeds, swam in the clear, shallow water and wandered around the beautiful area. Little hidden paths connect to other small beaches nearby, but we thought “our” beach was the prettiest and most charming. The whole attentive, lovely team made it such a relaxing, memorable stay.

The setting was so peaceful, with a lovely view and the beach very close by. The staff were nice, and I enjoyed every minute there. I'd suggest booking a sea-view room. Breakfast was the one small letdown, since it was the same each morning, either Sri Lankan food or eggs and toast. A bit more choice would be nice.
