Villa Nilaveli

It was so peaceful here, with the beach feeling like our own private stretch. The owner was friendly and helped arrange money exchanges, snorkeling trips, and dolphin watching. There was a fridge in the room to keep water cold, plus taps for rinsing sand off our feet.

The beach setup was a highlight: direct access, loungers and hammocks, and a quieter spot near the end of the beach with fewer tourists. We were there just before high season. The shallow sandy stretch goes a long way out, and the waves were good for relaxed body surfing. I think it would suit families with slightly older kids, around 7-12. We stayed three nights in a spacious cabana. It had a fridge, working AC and ceiling fan, a four-poster king bed with a mosquito net, a lockable cupboard, and a useful rack for beach and bath towels. The place was clean, though out in nature you still get the occasional little visitor. The shower had good pressure and hot water if you need it. Outside, there was a tap for washing off sand and a drying rack for wet swimsuits and towels. Amal was friendly, cooked well, and was always around for questions. We had dinner there one night and enjoyed chatting with him. Snorkel trips and massages can also be arranged through the hotel.

The cabana was roomy, clean, and tidy, and the whole place felt like a little slice of paradise on the Indian Ocean. There are only three cabanas plus the villa, and we were on a quiet stretch of Nilavelli Beach with easy access to a few bars and restaurants along the shore. Amal was a wonderful host who arranged our Pigeon Island snorkeling trip and a driver for the next leg of our journey. His breakfasts were fantastic. Great value, and we loved our stay.

Amal is delightful and takes really good care of his guests. He can arrange services through his private contacts, including a one-hour massage for 6000r and a Pigeon Island snorkeling trip for $60pp including tickets, without adding a markup compared with local quotes. The included Sri Lankan breakfast came with the best sambal I've tried. Dinner is a limited curry and rice menu, but it's excellent and needs to be pre-ordered in the morning. The prawns were better than at the seafood restaurants. There are insects and mosquitoes, as you'd expect, and several stray dogs. One pleasant dog is always around, but some further up the beach can be a bit aggressive and territorial. The cabanas themselves are a beautiful, comfortable place to stay, with the quiet beach a minute away and decks and hammocks. Highly recommended.
