The Hill Town Cottage

Ragu was the highlight of our visit. He went out of his way to help and make sure things were right, and shared plenty of useful local tips. He also made us a delicious, huge Sri Lankan breakfast. It’s great value, and I’d happily come back. The cottage has a lovely English-style garden where we enjoyed tea in the morning, plus two lounge spaces that worked well for a nightcap after dinner. Our room was clean and well looked after, and there was plenty of hot water in the shower.

We only stayed one night, but enjoyed the cottage and would recommend it. Its very British style fits beautifully with the surroundings of the “Little England” region.

The rooms were a real pleasure, especially the warm wooden interiors and soft blankets in the chilly mountains. The beds were large enough that three people might squeeze in, depending on their size. The bathroom was excellent, the sink worked fine, and the shower was good, though there was no soap holder. To get hot water, you have to switch it on outside the bathroom. The location and scenery are lovely, with shops within walking distance and the town close by. The hotel is peaceful and quiet. Ragu seemed nice, and the lady and the other man were really friendly. We were also given lunch when we arrived. Service could be better. The Western breakfast menu promised two eggs, one sausage, and yoghurt, but we had to ask for the yoghurt. We asked for runny sunny-side-up eggs, but they were fully cooked. The Sri Lankan food was good, especially the chicken and fried rice. They will fry food for you, but it’s very expensive for a small portion. We brought chicken from a local place to be deep-fried, and the charge was a fortune. Still, I rate the place highly and would really recommend it. Hopefully I can come again.

The house has a peaceful feel and is really nice. The people there were caring and very pleasant.
