I didn’t stay at the hotel, but the restaurant is in a brilliant location. I had the local curry and whole fish, both excellent, with fresh spices and wonderful flavours. The homemade ginger beer is worth recommending too. Rima was friendly and helpful, and explained all about the food. The guys serving were great as well.

The beachfront atmosphere was my favourite part. It’s peaceful, you can truly relax, and nobody bothers you. I booked a Tree House room through Booking.com at an off-season price during a business trip to Galle. It’s just a bed in the room, with a shared bathroom, but the sea view makes it special. Most of the guests seemed to be foreign travelers, and I was the only local guest. I didn’t need much service, so I left the staff to it, though I went downstairs to see how they treated guests. The hospitality was impressive, and everyone was friendly and welcoming, including to local guests. Food prices are mid-range. The menu is mostly international dishes, which might be a little confusing at first for a local person. I had roti with dhal curry and sambal for dinner, and it was delicious. They have various liquor options. I also saw weed listed on the menu and a designated smoking area for it, which I assume is mainly intended for foreign guests. I’d recommend the place to foreigners looking for a relaxing beachside break in Galle.

Back at Bara for a second visit, and again we felt really comfortable. The cabanas and toilets were clean, the beach location is lovely, and the vibe is great. Rima, Suna and the rest of the staff deserve a shoutout. The food was delicious, and they also have sweet donation-based yoga classes on the beach. Thanks for having us, see you again 🌟

The people here were so lovely, warm and attentive, and we felt looked after from the moment we arrived. Food was fresh, delicious and clearly prepared with care, with everything we tried full of flavour and nicely presented. Barra has a beautiful beachfront setting, and sitting by the ocean made the whole visit feel calm and magical. We left happy and relaxed. If you’re in Sri Lanka, I’d highly recommend stopping by for the food and lovely people.
