Kotiyagala Luxury Villas

Our beach-facing villa had a wide view of Yala’s rugged coast and the changing ocean. On a clear day, the Little Basses Reef Lighthouse, built in 1878, is visible about 7 km offshore. Watching the light and sea change through the day was a pleasure, and on a full-moon night the silver reflection across the water made for a peaceful, reflective atmosphere. The lodge is still getting started and isn’t fully operational, but we weren’t disappointed. Each villa has a generously sized plunge pool, big enough for a refreshing swim. The staff took good care of us throughout. Thanks to Nimal, Chef Shehan and his assistant Dilum for the lagoon crab, soups, salads, and more; stewards Nuwan, Supun, and Nilukshan; and Oshen from housekeeping, along with the many others who quietly helped make our stay. The sea-view room was beautiful, modern, and well furnished, and we loved watching all the animals below the boardwalk. The food was exceptional, especially the soups. The chef made wonderful dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and every staff member helped make our stay really special.

The team made a genuine effort to prepare vegetarian food once we explained our preferences, though the options were limited. The villa looked lovely, and the natural surroundings were nice, but the private infinity pool didn’t seem clean enough, so we didn’t use it. We stayed here near Yala National Park for our honeymoon. The property seems quite new and has a beautiful design, though the overall experience was mixed. At check-in, the sliding door to the pool area wasn’t closing properly. Staff fixed it after we called, but it felt a little unsafe at first. There was no in-room phone, just a mobile number, and sometimes it was hard to reach anyone late at night or early in the morning. Housekeeping also needs improvement. We found a red mark on the bedsheet, and cleanliness didn’t seem as good as at the other hotels we stayed in. Of our six stays, this would rank fifth. The place has potential, but some operational details need attention.

Spending two days surrounded by wildlife and natural beauty was peaceful, grounding, and unforgettable. Waking up with animals around the property made our stay at Kotiyagala feel magical. The food was incredible too, 10/10 for the chef. Every meal was full of flavor, beautifully prepared, and thoughtfully presented, with real care behind it. From the moment we arrived, every staff member was warm, friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely cared for. For a safari stay with wonderful food, service, and a close connection to nature, I can’t recommend this place enough. I’ll definitely be back.
