The staff were so friendly and wonderful with young children. Deshan was especially helpful, and even made sure our stay was going well when he had to take a sick day. General manager Morton also listened carefully to our feedback and went out of his way to make the visit memorable. That service deserves five stars on its own. We spent a lot of time eating out because we wanted to explore the area and its food. The hotel arranged a friendly local tuk tuk at a reasonable price and booked restaurants for us. Our driver was fantastic and waited while we ate, so we didn’t have to find another ride back. I’d recommend this for anyone wanting to get out and see a different part of the area. We had a lovely six-night stay at Amanwella and would happily return. The property has character, though it’s dated and could use an update. Don’t expect everything to look brand new and shiny. Those improvements have apparently come up in other reviews too.

The hotel talks about ethics but acts differently. The beach isn’t private property. Under the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Act, no hotel or individual can legally own a beach or block public access to it. It belongs to the locals.

The pool is in a fantastic spot, with amazing sunset views. Our personal butler, Jeewan, was polite and helpful. The main drawback is that there’s no gym. They do have a yoga class each morning at 8:30.

My impression was average at best, and I wouldn’t say the beach is worth a visit either. The sand is hard and heavy, mixed with lots of shells, so walking there is uncomfortable. More seriously, the hotel is trying to claim a public beach by force and treat it as private. That’s completely unacceptable. They should stay within their boundaries and leave a space that belongs to everyone alone. I’ve never seen this kind of behavior in Sri Lanka, and it’s disappointing. I agree with the other reviews saying not to support it, book a room, or use booking platforms for this place.

We’d planned to have lunch at the beach restaurant, even though we hadn’t read the earlier reviews. When I asked if we could order inside the restaurant rather than in the beach lounge, a security staff member came right up close to my face and spoke very rudely. I was shocked. Every other interaction I’d had in Sri Lanka so far had been pleasant and lovely.
