Happy hammocks, Weligama

There’s a lot going on if you want to join in, from family dinners to group rides to places for dancing. The beach is close, and new surfers can get a discount on board rental or lessons. It’s also clean and feels safe, with welcoming hosts and staff who make settling in easy. You might find other guests start to feel like your travel family. For getting close to sea turtles, the review board points you to the cheerful Hiru. A great place to stay a while and enjoy yourself.

This place feels social and laid-back, and it was easy to feel at home. People were pairing up for surf lessons and meals through the active group chat, but joining anything was always optional. One night we missed the bar after trivia and had an unplanned guitar singalong by the fire instead. The small-group limit helps keep the family-style welcome, and it’s social without being a party hostel. Parties are nearby, while hostel music usually stops around 10pm so you can sleep. The location worked really well: the beach is a 1-2 minute walk, and the area is a little quieter than the main strip, though more activity is only about four minutes away. There’s a supermarket, ATM, bottle shop, and plenty of restaurants close by. Staff gave good food tips, helped change large notes, and arranged tuks at fair prices. And the coffee’s excellent. I could extend and keep the same bed. Towels and padlocks were available for a deposit, and the bunk curtains covered the beds completely, which was great for privacy. The bedding is just a thin sheet and the showers weren’t hot, though that seems pretty standard in Sri Lanka. Casual dinners, optional evening plans, and wonderful social hosts, managers, and staff made it one of the chillest hostels I’ve stayed in.

My first hostel in Weligama, and I loved it. The bed was comfy, and it was great having free drinking water and a shared kitchen. There were lots of activities, with lovely hosts. Thanks for a really nice stay!

I ended up staying longer than planned because the place felt like a little family. It’s close to the beach and other things you need, and the kitchen and bar area make it easy to meet fellow travelers. The rooms and shared spaces were clean and comfortable. Staff were kind and ready to help, and the whole atmosphere was relaxed, friendly, and social without getting too loud. One of the best hostels I’ve stayed in on this trip.
