Rlj Kendeja Resort and Villas

After visiting Monrovia a few times, we switched to this hotel and resort this year. It was a great move. The staff, from management down, were amazing. As with any hotel, if something isn’t right, you need to speak up so they know and can fix it. They were great about putting things right when we did.

A lovely resort, and I really enjoyed staying here. The staff were courteous, professional, very friendly, and accommodating.

The beachside location is very good, and dinner was nice. The bar was the only decent area I found. Still, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. I checked out earlier than planned because of the poor condition of the property, which looks much better in photos. It seems like it was a good hotel years ago, but now it’s run down and showing little care or attention to detail. Breakfast and coffee were the biggest disappointments. I wanted to leave RLJ a positive review, but found it hard to do. Management needs to improve the customer experience.

The beach location and view are AMAZING, the staff and security were nice, and the food selection and quality were good. The place was clean, and Roy was still attending to the beach bar, which has been reduced to cement and wood. I enjoyed my stay overall and will come back, but I was disappointed that the resort isn’t in top shape. It’s only 16 years old, and the lack of maintenance is starting to show. I’d waited many years to stay at Robert Bob Johnson's beloved Kendeja resort, only to learn that he SOLD it in 2017. There are rotten boards, peeling paint, rusted gutters, and zinc roofing. Of the 78 rooms, maybe only 50-60 are operable. I toured the property and saw many abandoned rooms with no door locks being used for storage. My room had ceiling cracks and a few appliances that didn’t work. Food and drinks took an extremely long time to arrive. I wish Bob hadn’t sold it. That might not change anything, but I’m tempted to email him about how the property has fallen into disarray. I’m sure he’d be disappointed.
