The scenery is wonderful and the food was good, but the service was awful. At check-in after 3pm, reception spoke to us with unhappy faces and made us wait, treating us like criminals, as if we owed them money. After hiking, we checked out before 9 and sat for a while at 1pm on the ground-floor terrace to rest. The room service worker there smiled but said nothing, then called security, who gave us a severe warning.

The lodge was a highlight of our adventure, with friendly staff and very reasonable prices. Wi-Fi is strong in the cottages, and TV streaming works smoothly. The setting is beautiful too. Check out the rock pool and eat at the restaurant. The Maluti beer is very palatable.

The restaurant staff were pleasant and went out of their way to accommodate us for a light meal. The area itself is beautiful, and international overlanders would enjoy camping here, which makes the state of the campsite such a pity. We came out of our way to stay, but were extremely disappointed: knee-high grass, a derelict truck and container among other debris, and a generally unkempt site. The bathroom was passable, but the rest of the ablution buildings need a lot of TLC, and the braai areas were dirty and overgrown. I got the feeling this expensive lodge doesn't want campers. They should shut the campsite down.

The lodges are clean, nicely spaced apart, and the people are friendly. Wi-Fi was good too. Maliba lodge is worth the upgrade from river lodge. You're right by the river between big mountains, with lovely sunsets, stars at night, and great views in the daytime. A wonderful place to be, with enough space to have time to yourself.

We had a very good stay, with delicious food, a comfortable bed and pillows, and efficient check-in and check-out. The service was very good, and the lodge is wonderful, inside the national park. They provided an electric blanket. There's also a fireplace in the room, but it doesn't warm the large space enough, and the bathroom has no heat. It gets very cold in there, so a portable heater would be better. The cold bathroom was the one downside.
