The restaurant serves high quality food, though its hours don’t really suit people visiting for business. The place is set in a convent, and the rooms and atmosphere have a calming feel. Good for an overnight stay if you’re not on a business trip.

There’s a real sense of history and authenticity here, along with good flavors, peaceful surroundings, warm hospitality, and service. I’d recommend coming for the experience. It’s worth it.

The restaurant’s menu is inventive and makes strong use of local ingredients. The food stands out among Kaunas’s excellent dining spots, and the friendly staff are clearly trying. Still, some service details need work, like filling a wine glass to the top with sparkling tea. The chef’s skill deserves better surroundings outside. Those cheap tents and the bright red Coca Cola stand clash with the elegant Baroque setting. And watch out for mosquitoes. The owners seem to have made some arrangement to feed them by keeping guests outside, I assume. The hotel is an amazing property in a wonderful location, in a former Baroque convent beside a beautiful artificial lake. But the service felt careless and unwelcoming. The luxury rooms have cheap decor, and some are so cramped you can’t stand up from the bed without hitting your head. The quiet retreat is also affected by young people testing out their second-hand cars and bikes in the nearby parking lot. That may not be the hotel’s fault, but perhaps they could speak with the municipality about the noise, which is covered by EU standards. Early morning music can be heard in all the rooms, as if to make sure guests wake when the hotel manager decides. The restaurant may have a Michelin star, but the hotel staff seem not to have been told that luxury means being kind and making an effort to pamper guests. Despite being in one of Northern Europe’s major Baroque masterpieces, the hotel offers no special experiences. Even the coffee is fake Nespresso, which fits the notorious frugality of Lithuania and especially Kaunas. From reception to housekeeping, staff training falls below any standard, let alone four stars. One person on the night shift was a nice exception on one of the nights. Who knows whether it’s better to try amateurishly without fearing failure, or to keep trying for the best instead of settling for mediocre results? Maybe this is the price of seeking luxury and a feast in a convent, supposedly an oxymoron. But I’ve seen that combination work at places like Prague Mandarin Oriental. Why not here?

The food felt purposeful and artistic, closely tied to its setting, and this is clearly an author’s dining experience. I tried the cabbage “steak,” which had a lovely mix of crunch, sweetness, and acidity, and showed off the kitchen’s skill. The menu draws on local ingredients and culinary heritage in a seasonal, modern way. I came by myself for dinner at Monte Pacis, set within the historic, still-functioning 17th-century Pažaislis Monastery, Lithuania’s finest example of Italian Baroque architecture. The terrace was peaceful. Inside, the tall wooden chairs and frescoed ceilings looked striking and atmospheric. Service was subdued. No one offered me guidance on the menu, the concept, or tasting options, and the bread and butter arrived without any explanation. I heard staff giving other tables detailed descriptions, so a more engaging approach for solo diners would improve the experience. There are four-course and six-course tasting menus for €70 and €80. Optional wine pairings are selected by the in-house sommelier, with over 200 bottles available. Follow me for more artful bites and bubbles @bubbles_with_joli 🍷✨

There’s no breakfast buffet, just an à la carte menu. The room safe was so secure that guests could take it into town with them.
