We were disappointed to lose 100 euros from our damage deposit over things we weren’t told were rules. The hostess said the apartment was left with toilet rubbish, unmade beds, some dishes unwashed and not put away, beds moved, and a cracked glass. We hadn’t even used that glass. With children, you can simply forget about making the beds or moving them back. Her letter said 50% of the deposit would be refunded for those reasons. In my view, people want to relax on vacation, not clean their apartment.

We’ve stayed in these apartments for nine years in a row and have never had a single thing disappoint us. They’re always cozy and exceptionally clean, and the hosts are extremely kind and ready to help if you need something or are missing anything. Paying for a stay doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. We should respect the hosts’ efforts to give guests a good rest and follow the rules, which are simply polite, humane, and necessary.

A child pushing a cot could end up costing you 100 euros. We’ve never before been charged that much for damage when, as far as we could tell, nothing was damaged. Be careful so this doesn’t spoil your vacation and good memories of a wonderful place.

We stayed with family from 18 to 22 March and were shocked to find a non-refundable damage charge over an untidy toilet and bed linen, even though those rules weren’t written down. My son-in-law also fixed the fan, which wasn’t working, and that could have been counted as damage too. The hostess was shockingly rude. We’ll appeal to consumer rights to seek compensation for the damage we’ve suffered.
