We arrived for a Saturday overnight stay with massages and ended up spending the evening in our tiny room eating pizza because there was nowhere else to get food or even a drink. The BBQ evening was fully booked, and we were told there was no other restaurant anywhere in the manor, just advised to eat elsewhere. We had received an email a few days earlier saying we could reserve a BBQ spot, but it never said there’d be nowhere to eat without one. The price is sky-high, and it shouldn’t be this way: you pay for a manor stay and arrive only to go hungry. The rooms were also very small and nowhere near as impressive as the photos, and the sculpture area was tasteless. To top it off, the Miller’s House isn’t part of the Pakruojis Manor territory, so visiting it costs extra. We paid, only to find the event was over and the area was about to close. They said we could return Sunday with the same tickets, but didn’t mention the gates wouldn’t open in the morning or that half the attractions inside would be closed. The idea is fine, but it feels like they try to squeeze money out of you at every turn.

The service was good and the food okay, but the main building was closed and the rooms were around 15 degrees cold. The radiators were cold too. At 145 per night, I wasn’t expecting that. The hard-surface parking was full, so I had to park on the grass. It’s bad that they take more people than their facilities can handle.

There’s plenty to do all day, and the estate is known for its flower displays. You can hear lots of stories about the history and spooky tales, and there’s a special attic trip for adults on weekends only. It works for families, couples and pensioners. The downside is that the food is only at the far end of the estate.

There’s a lot to see here, from flowers and sculptures to animals, old objects and activities. The bar serves delicious cumin kvass and locally made craft beer, and the restaurant has an interesting menu of old local foods. A little kitschy, but a great place for visitors of any age.

Loved the Amber museum 😍. Somehow it felt like I’d been taken back a century, looking at a piece of time frozen in place 👏👏
