The staff, apart from one person, were charming and helpful, but couldn't make a once-was establishment feel alive. Even the red elephant looked like it was making an escape. We had booked a longer stay, but left early, and were very relieved to go. There was no sense of wellness when we checked out, just deep regret. It wasn't worth the money, or any money. We heard the manager was the former owner's daughter, so perhaps a major refurb is planned. I hope so, because despite our miserable stay, the place clearly had a past. If there's a future, guests deserve an honest picture upfront and more realistic expectations. I can't imagine the hotel can keep going this way, even if wedding events get the full treatment when the sun shines. The rooms are worn out by hotel standards, and the floors squeak everywhere. Even lying still in bed, we heard the staff trolley rattle, clonk and smash along. Sound carries through the building, and all the guests seemed to have the same complaints. The pool wasn't working, a fact conveniently left off the website and unmentioned by staff when we booked. What used to be a pool is now a supposed relaxing think tank, where you can lie on loungers, stare at the ceiling and imagine what it felt like to swim. A real letdown. The sky-blue fountain was actually toxic green. Nemo would rather stay lost, or be deep-fried and served with chips, than spend time here. Our dinner was in an empty restaurant, but still needed to be booked in advance, presumably so they could prepare the freezer. The maître d’ swung between charismatic and acting inconvenienced, as if his life was imploding every twenty minutes. The atmosphere felt like a Dignitas waiting room, quiet and soulless, though oddly comforting in the thought that it would soon be over. In the heart of the Luxembourg forest, the setting is lovely and the property is clean and well kept. We had delicious dishes, with a good range of ingredient styles, textures and temperatures, plus a superb wine selection. Service was professional and friendly. The price during restodays felt in line with the quality. A good culinary experience.

The welcome from the guys downstairs was great, and the reception, pool, massages and restaurant breakfast all made for a top experience. We even got a free 15-minute back massage and a soap gift. The hotel has real potential, though it looks a little dated throughout, and the garden could use a refresh. Our room faced the road, so we could hear cars. We also weren't told beforehand that the pool had no water. Thank you.

We were allowed to bring our dog Toffee as an exception, which we appreciated. The panoramic view from the terrace was a highlight, and the care given to both the setting and the food made for a very good meal. The staff were attentive, knew the menu well and suggested wines by the glass that went perfectly with our dishes. Dessert was beautifully arranged too. For Sunday lunch at Restaurant Belair in Echternach, we chose the five-course menu: delicious soup, vitello tonnato, sorbet, and a fish filet with crisp skin. Everything was carefully prepared and presented. I was surprised by the Mediterranean style, which I hadn't expected. I hope they keep working with that cook, who brings together the influences that represent Luxembourg: Luxembourgish, German, French and Mediterranean, here Italian and Portuguese. The menu blends French and German influences and uses fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant sits in peaceful woodland with lovely nature views. I'd recommend it to anyone in Echternach looking for a high-quality meal, and I'll be back.
