Our departure day could have been stressful, with snow closing roads, but the owner called to find out which routes were shut and advised us on the way towards Agadir. The road to Marrakesh had been closed by the police, so we were very grateful for his help. Seeing local people enjoying the snow in the Atlas Mountains was unforgettable too. The place itself is peaceful, with an exceptional view of the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and traditional Berber architecture that fits the old caravan settlement. The owner was kind, and communication was easy and pleasant.

We came and went several times a day, and the location made that easy. From the large terrace there’s an amazing view of the kasbah and old town, just a short walk across the stream. The riad is a spectacular old Berber-style building made from mud brick, straw, and cane, with lovely rugs and ethnic furnishings. The staff were kind, especially Rashid, who kept finding ways to be thoughtful. Breakfast was really good.

The terrace has a lovely view of Ait Ben Haddou, and it’s an easy walk across the river. But this didn’t feel like a 4 star hotel. The corridors are dark, narrow, and dimly lit, and both of our rooms were small and cold in December. There was plenty of hot water, but showering was freezing with the wind howling and cold air getting into the bathroom. No hairdryer or kettle in the rooms. We tried hard to get a kettle from the staff and ended up with a thermos flask. Breakfast was the same usual fare we’d had at other accommodations, and the price wasn’t worth it.

For the premium prices by Moroccan standards, this is a pretty basic hotel. The location and terrace view are the only real positives. Staff seemed grumpy, breakfast was terrible and didn’t even include water, the rooms weren’t soundproofed, and the Wi-Fi was patchy. I think you can find a better place in town for what they charge.
