The location is good, though outside smells come and go and knock it down a point. Riad Chez Brahim is an affordable, family-run place, and it feels about right for the price. The rooms are arranged around the central balcony and lightwell, with stairs to all of them; there’s also a terrace for breakfast or relaxing. It’s older and lacks the finer touches of pricier places, but things work, the shower is excellent, and the bed was good. Clean-ish, but showing its age: the cushion covers and sheets could use replacing, and some paint wouldn’t hurt. Breakfast was enough to eat and came with lovely fresh bread, though hotter coffee would have been nice.

There’s no water provided in the room, so pick some up at one of the nearby shops, just a minute or two away. Our room also had no TV or fan, only a heater, and it wasn’t very warm while we were there. I paid 120MAD in extra city tax for two people for two nights. We had a very nice stay and the breakfast was good. Reception staff may have trouble communicating in English, but a translation app helped us work it out, and they were kind. They also let us leave our bags at reception after an early checkout.

After arriving tired from a long trip, we decided to leave Riad Chez Brahim and find another hostel. We’d booked ahead, but a woman in the lobby wanted 600 Dirham per person per night, supposedly as “tourist Taxes.” We had a long discussion and then walked a short way to Hotel Gnanoua, where we had a very relaxed stay and no trouble with what seemed like dubious tourist taxes. I wouldn’t recommend this place. If you stay here, be extremely careful you don’t get scammed.

Rooms at Riad Chez Brahim are good value, and breakfast is good too. It’s in a handy spot inside the medina. I’d recommend it to people travelling in Essaouira.

The staff are lovely, and the bed was comfortable. It’s clean and quiet despite being right inside the Medina, with a good shower too. I’d stay here again if I come back to Essaouira.
