The room and location felt like a case of getting what you paid for. It was fairly near the interesting parts of the old town, but getting there was a maze, and Dar Tamo was hard to spot once we reached the area. I had to correct the hotel's map pin, and Google still hadn't mapped the Fes medina properly for walking. We got a room different from the one we'd booked, which was okay. It was bright and airy, just off the terrace, but the floor was dusty, the bathroom smelled like a portaloo, and the sheets had a sweaty smell. Our companions had no problem with their first-floor room, though they were kept awake two nights running by guests and staff in the shared area. On a tight budget, you could probably do worse. Otherwise, it may be worth paying a little extra to stay nearer the blue gate.

The owners are extremely friendly, and this family-run riad is clean, with comfortable rooms and a lovely view from the roof. Finding it isn't easy, so don't rely on GPS. From R'cif Square, enter the old town and take the first right. Keep going straight until the next right, where there's a small black sign overhead with the riad's name. Follow the arrows after that. Or call them and they can guide you.

The place is bad.

The place itself is really nice, and receptionist Simohammed was great. But manager Tariq gets -10 stars from me. The online ad listed rooms at 150 dirhams without explaining the price, then after we arrived and filled in the accommodation paperwork, the rate came to 200 or even 250 dirhams per room. He was also unpleasant and disrespectful on the phone, demanding the remaining balance right away even though it was past 1 a.m. He made us feel as if we were thieves. We left the following day very unhappy.

Dusty, dirty, smelly, and neglected. There was even a sandwich in the rubbish that looked a month old. The shower was clogged and the toilet didn't work. The man at reception did try his best, but speaking even basic English seemed difficult for him. I wouldn't recommend it :)
