This authentic kasbah and camp is tucked among the dunes, a short distance from the village. The nomad family running it gave me a big welcome and a real taste of their way of life. The fresh, homemade food was great, and they can prepare vegetarian meals if you ask. Evenings meant sitting around the fire, playing music and drinking Saharan whisky, the green tea they make over the fire. They also lead wonderful desert excursions by camel or jeep. The landscape around Mhamid is surprisingly varied, from the huge dunes of Erg Chegaga to the Hamadas and greener patches with tamarisks. I’d recommend staying more than one night so you can settle into the rhythm of the place. A big recommendation, and thanks to everyone there for making my stay so special.

We really liked how quiet it was, with little sand dunes all around. The host was lovely and welcoming, and the location was fantastic.
