Dar El Karam

The people were the best part. The staff, cook, and manager were all excellent, and breakfast was great. They also served fantastic tea, biscuits, and bread. The location is excellent, with lots of food and shopping right outside, and it's very close to the Medina and Kesbah. We could leave our luggage after checkout too. The interior was the one place we didn't like during our whole 10-day Morocco tour. It felt shabby, with no decoration at all, and wasn't clean or well maintained enough. The room was a bit cramped, there was no hot water at the basin, and our blanket smelled of cat pee, though they replaced it promptly when we asked. For what it costs, it isn't good value. They should consider charging less than half, or a third, of the current price.

The owner lives on the top floor with a cat and a bird. A woman handles the cleaning and makes the traditional breakfast, and complimentary tea is served too. We only stayed one night and had a pleasant time. The dar is close to sights and places to eat. Our second-floor room looked onto a quiet corridor, unlike the first-floor rooms facing the dining area. If you're there longer, an ensuite toilet may be more convenient, since the 'private' one meant a walk. Ours had a broken hose, so we used the other 'private' toilet downstairs. The doors lock with keys only.

The rooms were clean, the staff friendly and knew the city well, and the prices were reasonable. Reception was excellent too. I'd definitely recommend a stay at Dar Al Karam.

We felt so welcome. Hassan was generous and really friendly, and he knows a lot about Morocco, especially Rabat. He also put us in touch with people for surfboard rentals and other things. Encounters like that make a vacation great 👍
