Pharos Hotel

Housekeeping seemed good, there was a nice garden area to eat in near the buffet and bar, and some of the food and drink service staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. The buffet itself was limited, though, and apart from the eggs and cheese, the ingredients didn't seem especially fresh. Coffee was instant, and the "butter" seemed more like margarine. We booked through travel firm Rainbow for a double bed and a balcony or terrace, expecting they'd make sure we got what we'd paid for. Instead, on arrival we were put in a room in the "old building" with two separate Eastern European-style twin beds and no balcony, terrace, or other outdoor sitting space. Staff said they were full or overbooked and couldn't give us the room type we'd reserved for at least two days. They offered no compensation or alternative. Rainbow's agent in Bar called the hotel, then told us our room wasn't available for "technical reasons." Again, no compensation or other option was offered. After two days we did get an "upgrade" to the type of room we'd originally booked, but there was no refund for the nights in the smaller room without an outdoor area. I'd give it two stars because it was at least clean, and Bar, Montenegro, is a very good destination.

The place is secluded, the walk to the beach is great, and people are really friendly. My room was comfortable, spacious, and had a good bathroom. The problem was the party in the bar downstairs. Loud music carried up until very late and kept me awake. I was tired from the day and had an early start, so I lost sleep. Otherwise, the room was good.

A great staff, clean and pleasant hotel, and delicious restaurant food. The neighborhood is nice, and the beach is within walking distance. The local supermarket is about a five-minute walk away, and the farmers market isn't much farther. There's a beautiful new Orthodox Church and a sports complex nearby. One of the oldest, best, and affordable hotels in the area, highly recommended. They also have shuttle services, but I mostly walked and can't say much about it since I didn't use it.

The pool area was really lovely. I do wish the public toilets had locks, though. Sometimes unpleasant people could spoil the evening.
