Hotel Grbalj

The breakfast was so bad and limited that we ate elsewhere, and the “Superior Double Room” felt more like a closet. There wasn't room to open a suitcase without blocking the door. We paid an outrageous amount for a place without basic amenities, and the staff were rude and unhelpful. The bed was awful. It felt like the mattress was upside down, with springs digging into us, and my partner and I woke up each morning with aching backs and sore ribs. Dusty air came from the practically useless AC, which stayed at one temperature. The tiny window wasn't useful for drying towels, and without a shower door, water splashed everywhere. The towels were so small they could've been napkins. There was no elevator, so we had to carry our bags ourselves up to the 4th floor. The hotel was overpriced and uncomfortable, and I wouldn't recommend it. Avoid it.

We didn't stay at the hotel, but we ate at its restaurant four times and really enjoyed it. The waiter was attentive and quick. My wife ordered the grilled squid every visit, so she clearly liked it, while I tried four different main courses and enjoyed them all. We had wine with each meal, and preferred the reds. Prices were great by European standards.

The location worked well for us, not far from the beach but not right beside it, and the area was quiet. The balconies were nice, and breakfast was really good with plenty to choose from. It wasn't expensive, so I'd recommend it. The building and furniture were a bit old, which was okay, and there was a broken chair in our room, though I'm not complaining about that. Most rooms are small, and you can't see the beach from them. That's why I gave it four stars, the rooms.

I was told I couldn't finish the coffee included with my room on the patio because I hadn't “purchased” it. That was ridiculous, especially since nobody could give an actual reason beyond that. The hotel was fairly nice, though expensive for what it is, but this put me off completely. I wouldn't return or recommend it. Manager, I hope the negative review was worth it.
