Hippocampus Hotel

The room was clean, and the Old Town location is the one real advantage. There are plenty of other hotels nearby, though, and this one was easily the worst hotel experience I’ve had. I can’t understand its 4-star rating. We knew there would be noise, but that was the least of our problems. The service was appalling. One staff member kept giving us wrong information, contradicting both the tourist information centre and his own colleagues. The staff overall came across as cold, dismissive, and unwelcoming. Avoid this place. You’ll thank yourself later.

Being right in the heart of the old town made the Hippocampus a great base for exploring beautiful Kotor. It also meant we heard noise from the bar next door at night, the one downside of an otherwise amazing stay. The staff we met were all friendly and welcoming, our room was large and comfortable, and breakfast was good. A little more variety at breakfast would have been welcome.

The location in the center of Old Town Kotor is hard to beat, with everything within walking distance. There’s also a rooftop restaurant with a great view, and the staff there were extremely hospitable. Breakfast came quickly each morning and tasted great. They cut fresh fruit for us, and when we asked for food or drinks, they brought it promptly and with care. Small details like that stood out. I also felt safe knowing there was a receptionist available 24 hours a day. Other places couldn’t offer that, and it was reassuring to know I could ask for help at any time. The hospitality was what I’ll remember most. Staff checked in with us throughout our stay, and the room cleaners regularly asked whether we needed bathroom supplies or anything else. The front desk team and Bojan shared ideas for things to do in Kotor and even offered us beach towels and a bag when we’d forgotten ours. Those gestures, along with everyone’s politeness and good conversations, made a big difference. There was some noise, but I don’t think it’s fair to blame the hotel. The old town is small, and music can be heard from far away. Thanks to the Hotel Hippocampus team for a great stay. I strongly recommend it if you’re visiting Kotor.

The terrace has a stunning view, and the food was excellent. The meat was cooked just right, and we loved how the octopus was presented. We had a chance to chat with Chef Necip and thank him for the delicious dishes. We’d definitely recommend this restaurant in Kotor.
