Winter is my favorite time to visit, when the place feels gloomy and clouds pour down the mountainside. There’s decent food, souvenir shops and authentic spots. If you’ve already seen a couple of old walled cities, you might not be all that amazed.

The bay and its turquoise water are stunning, with mountain peaks over a kilometer high rising straight from the water. The scenery brings Norwegian fjords to mind. You can climb crumbling steps to an old lookout tower, take another set of steps to a monastery-like place, drive up the narrow serpentine road on the cliff, or ride the gondola outside town. The old town on the Adriatic coast is lovely, though honestly nothing unique. It’s still a top place in Montenegro. Just keep in mind that local businesses know that too.

The views are lovely and there are lots of shops, but our meals at two restaurants were a disaster. The kebab outside the old town was the one thing we enjoyed. Do with that information as you please.

It’s almost 2,000 steps to the top of the mountain, and the entrance fee is a bit steep at around 12 euros. Kids under 12 get in free. Don’t lose your ticket, since you need to show it and return it on the way down.

A magical town, full of history and sights to see. Every corner has something interesting. It feels like a fresh destination where you can clear your mind and refresh your senses, with a lot of potential for investment opportunities.
